Elgin and the northeast Columbia corridor — stretching toward Lugoff and Camden — is one of the faster-growing areas in the Columbia metro. New construction, subdivision development, and rural properties being converted for residential use have all driven increased well drilling activity in Kershaw County over the last decade.

Kershaw County's geology sits in a transitional zone near the Fall Line — the boundary between the SC Piedmont and the Coastal Plain. This means well conditions vary more than in areas firmly in one zone. Some Elgin properties drill through transitional sedimentary layers and hit water in the 150–250 foot range. Others, particularly further north toward Camden, encounter harder Piedmont rock requiring deeper drilling and rotary equipment. We've drilled in enough of Kershaw County to know what to expect in different parts of the county before the rig arrives.

Many rural Kershaw County properties don't have access to municipal water service — county water lines don't reach every road. For these properties, a private well is the only practical water source, and maintaining that well properly isn't optional.
